Okay, finally another picture in the costume design series, the second to last one!
Sunny is a Light Person, which basically means she can turn herself into semi-solid light. Her kind was created to fight Shadow People, which basically are shadows that feed on human souls. She tries to lead a normal life and does boxing for fun, but the Shadows make that kind hard since they’re constantly trying to kill Light People and she has an obligation to fight Shadows. She lives with her aunt since her parents were killed by the Shadows, and she’s sort of resigned to not living past 30, since most Light People don’t.
Her personality is a bit of “tough tomboy” mixed with “bubbly.” She’s often chipper, pretty blunt, can have a sarcastic streak at times. She likes to goof around and has no worries about making a fool of herself. When she doesn’t like something, she tends to excuse it as stupid. While resigned to dying early, she sort of fears death and tends to have a big avoidance problem. I’m still working out more details, since she’s one of my underdeveloped characters.
Her costume’s pretty much just a boxing outfit, since she technically just turns into a Silhouette of light to fight crime and I was like “durr…”
And now for the random doodles.
The winged girl is Angel, who is a really old character, probably one of my oldest and really the oldest still used. (I made her up when I was 12, I think.) She’s a cyborg built from a kidnapped girl to kill vampires in a post apocalyptic world. Her “real name” is 1298A, but she called herself Angel because she popped into a church and pictures of angels. Well, technically her real name is “Jenny,” but she doesn’t and won’t ever remember being Jenny.
Angel’s personality comes off as cold and robotic at first. She has this eerie and blunt way of talking about things like death that are at odds with the fact that she looks to be about 10, but once you get to know her, it’s pretty noticeable that she tends to act like a petulant and opinionated child. She also believes she’s soulless and emotionless, though that’s not really the case. Oddly enough, she has a sense of spirituality/religion. (A religion that is similar-ish to Christianity.)
The redhead woman/the woman hugging herself is Susan Carson (neé Holland). She’s Susan Holland’s paternal aunt. This is her in her youth. Again, the Holland’s are far from nice and because of that Susan C. grew up fairly timid and soft. In college she however broke off from her family and met Kevin Carson. Being away from her abusers and having someone who genuinely cared about her. helped her heal. While she’s still very soft and can be timid, she found her strength. She got pregnant while still in school, probably due to her and Kevin having a slip up with the birth control, though she did stay in school. Kevin and her married soon after and are actually a very happy couple. They had twin boys and then eighteen years later had triplet girls. (The two love kids.) As an adult, Susan can be quite steely if anything threatens to harm her family.
More costume redesigns/designs and long bio’s coming up~ XD (And just for a background on this image series… it’s a series of my girl/woman ‘superheroes’ each in a costume with a color that represents her out of a list of 9 colors. I have two left. A girl named Sunny and YuChi drawn in the same format as the rest of these girls. After this I’m doing a similar series with non-powered girls… and then I might do one with the boys.)
Sarah’s a super-genius superhero. Her personality can best be described as egotistical and grouchy. She’s actually got a lot of empathy, but little social grace and tends to be a bit insufferable at times. One of the things she’s really envious is of people who know how to comfort others. Sometimes, she feels like, even with all her smarts, she’s not very useful because when people need emotional suport, she can’t be there for them.
Her home life isn’t ideal… Her mom got pregnant as a teenager, but didn’t want to be stuck forever in the shitty town she lived in so she left Sarah with her (Sarah’s mom’s) mother (Sarah’s maternal grandfather died in Vietnam). Sarah’s dad had the same mentality. But, her Nana does a great job taking care of her, even if she doesn’t really understand her granddaughter most of the time. Though, Nana Johnson gets Alzheimer’s when Sarah’s 14, but Sarah’s gotten into Uni (having skipped four grade) by then and Nana Johnson’s sister takes care of Nana.
Sarah’s also on a superhero team with Gwen, Zoey and a couple others that I haven’t drawn yet (some of which are my best friends character’s so, the probably won’t be drawn ever… XD). They were all trained by a retried Superhero named Daniel Miller (Sarah’s uncle once removed, though Sarah doesn’t know it, mostly because Nana Johnson got disowned (for being a white woman marrying a black man in the 60s) and doesn’t keep in contact with any relatives but the one sister who takes her in.
Oh and Sarah and Zoey become sort of a couple, though it goes unacknowledged for a while since they don’t announce it and are both pretty asexual and don’t do more than hold hands on random occasions.
Bailey is YuChi’s side kick. She’s a fairly new character, so I’m still developing her… but I do know she was in foster care for one reason or another. Though, she kept running away from her foster homes and winding up on the streets. She lands in the same city as YuChi (and Kiandra, Ryan, Thane, Takechi, Sanjana and Susan) and ends up thinking that YuChi is the most badass superhero in town and pretty much begs YuChi to let her be her sidekick. YuChi takes her in then and well things go fairly swimmingly. She takes on the Red Squire as a name to match YuChi’s Pink Knight and models her costume after YuChi too.
As for personality, Bailey’s pretty rough and tumbly. She’s got plenty of sass and attitude, and calls YuChi out on her shit. Bailey’s also a bit of a dancer and has got a thing for hiphop dance.
Kiandraas well go on one about her too. The name Ghost comes from both her pale costume (which is really just random items from her wardrobe) and from the way her powers work. She’s a Witch (which in my world is basically one of a 100ish people around the world chosen to protect the balance between man, nature and magic) who likes to go around using her powers to save people as well as do her ‘Witch job.’ (This is not considered normal by the Witches since they aren’t suposed to use their powers for anything other than protecting balance.) Her powers, at this age at least, basically amount to telekinesis, so, most of the time she doens’t get close to the criminals she’s fighting. Also, she has a ‘do no more harm than necessary’ policy and absolutely won’t take a life. So, often time’s it’s like a ghost rope tying someone up.
Like many other of my characters, her home life is not lovely at all. Her mom’s the owner of Wohoo, a company that’s similar to Yahoo or MSN and her dad’s a computer programer. Because of her mom’s job, they traveled around a lot, so Kiandra was homeschooled until high school and was a very lonely kid. Her mom had her own secrets that related to magic and in order to ‘protect’ Kiandra, she tended to keep her daughter as a distance. When Kiandra was ten, her parents divorced and her dad, having his own magical secrets got caught up with magical stuff and stopped contacting Kiandra. Her mom is also one of those high pressure parents, which is actually fine-ish with Kiandra who wants to become a doctor, but at the same time does alienate Kiandra from her mom.
At twelve Kiandra gets magic powers and becomes a vigilante. And in high school she meets Takechi, Sanjana, Ryan and Thane.
Zoey’s personality can almost be described as both robotic and mousey… She’s really quiet, eerily so and tends to very much keep to herself. When talking to people, she can seem rather stuttery, afraid of everything and shy, but does have moments when she’s forceful, especially when someone’s being cruel. One of the things that bothers Sarah the most about Zoey is that Zoey has a tendency to disappear on personal missions for month and not tell anyone else about it.
As for her history, her home life wasn’t too sad actually. Her family was poor and her parents worked late hours so Zoey took care of the house and of her little brother. Then around fourteen, mysterious necklaces ended up appearing all over her home town and she picked one up. Each necklace gave the user ‘superpowers,’ and Zoey got flight and shooting energy beams. Then people used those powers for whatever ends they chose… Zoey became a superhero, partially because her and her little brother really loved the concept. She used to be a shy girl so becoming a hero helped her come out of her shell, but… then it turned out that the necklaces were sapping away people’s life force every time they used their powers and if they tried to get rid of the necklace, they died instantly. The creator was a power hungry man who basically had the demonic power of making deals. He’d done this to quite a few towns before.
Zoey and others found this out and gathered the powered people to stop him before everyone died and he moved on to the next town… and after a battle, Zoey ended up being the only survivor. Her brother had also died earlier because of a wearer of the necklace. She couldn’t ditch the necklace after the guy died, though she couldn’t use the powers either. She didn’t want to go home, really couldn’t face anyone so she ended up on the streets for months doing vigilante work and trying not to starve. Daniel Miller found her when she was in his city however and took her in and after that, things got better. Though, she’s still getting over the emotional trauma of the whole event.
This is Susan, a slight redesign of her old ‘work outfit’. She’s basically a kick ass assassin for her family and also is not so well treated by her family. Her personality is proud, a bit cold, awkward in casual situations but confident and a tad flirtatious when she’s kicking ass.
She’s also Elaine’s cousin, Ryan’s older sister and got a thing against Kiandra.
Susan’s biracial (Dad’s English, Mum’s Korean-Japanese) and I was trying to get the look. Not sure if I did, so if anyones got any tips, feel free to shoot them at me. ^_^
A redesign for an old costume of my character Gwen. (The top is the redesign, the rest were considerations.) Her old costume was way, way, WAY too showy for something meant to be fought in and couldn’t possibly stay on. -___-;;; Gwen is a Superhero character of mine who goes by ‘X.’ She has peak human conditioning as a super power (think Captain America) and uses archery as her fighting style. Her personality is however describable as ‘dumb blonde’ with a surprising amount of emotional maturity.
So, this is Elija and he’s a polite, tad old fashioned Angel with a slightly mischievous sense of humour. He’s inspired by the main character in Dostoevsky’s book, The Idiot (which I sorta had a mini-crush on because gah! so nice and pure and god, the end, why~~~??!!! Q ____Q ). This is just a rough design. It’s a little to generic still and I give too many men this body type, so expect more redesigns.
So, here’s more YuChi (re)designs. I decided to change up her body. In the last picture I tried to give her something other than the “curvy, skinny, big breasted” girl thing, because really, that’s hardly the only body type and hardly the only kind of pretty. But I don’t think I went far enough. My best friend commented that I could still push on giving girls less “ideal” proportions. I wanted something athletic, so I went to this page (a reference of olympic athletes and their very, very big variety of body types) http://ninamatsumoto.wordpress.com/2010/12/18/athletic-body-diversity-reference-for-artists/# and used the athlete Tabitha Yim as the reference.
